The municipal council in Temerin has resolved on July 21 that the memorial in Bački Jarak/Jarek may be erected. This was
published under Nr. 06-21-4/2016-01 in the Official Temerin Journal. The published announcement in the crystal-clear official
language was received by the editorial department. in the newspaper BLIC the following article was published on July 28, 2016
which relies on the publishing in the municipal newspaper:
“MEMORIAL FOR THE GERMAN VICTIMS OF THE CAMP IN BAČKI JARAK”
A memorial for the Danube Swabians who lost their lives in the camp Bački Jarak during and after the Second World War will be erected in that place. The unveiling shall take place yet in fall.
The Federal Executive Board (Bundesvorstand) will inform the fellow Danube Swabians (Landsleute) about further
developments in appropriate form!
The municipal council of Temerin has resolved to erect a memorial in commemoration of the 6,500 victims, predominantly women and children, who lost their lives in the camp. Anton Beck, member of the committee and delegate of the Federal Association (Bundesverband) of the Territorial Association of Danube Swabians said that we have waited for the memorial in Jarek for twelve years already. It will be a plain memorial with a cross and a plaque with a text describing what happened at this place. We are now only waiting for the building permit; everything else has been prepared, said Beck. Beck added: in Bački Jarak there was no camp with barracks but instead the entire village was converted into a camp.
Up to 120 people were placed in the houses, sometimes even two families in one room. Not all of them died due to violence, execution by shooting, but they rather died due to illness, cold and hunger. They didn’t get anything to eat for days, and couldn’t procure food themselves because the village was guarded by Partisans, said Beck.
